The black and white self assembly mobile uses images from the BabyShapes books and is 3-dimensional. Because the images are presented horizontally as well as vertically, the patterns are clearly visible to the newborn baby when lying down, as well as to on-lookers (the right-hand picture, below shows a baby's view of the mobile). When placed within the optimum range of vision (appx 22cm/9ins) it is fascinating for new babies, and because the mobile hangs from thread it is easily moved to wherever the baby is. It is easy to add other shapes or your own designs, so making the mobile more interesting as the baby develops.
Care should be taken to ensure the mobile is out of reach of the baby. Some babies become stimulated and very active when they see the shapes (lots of arm movements!)
We have reports from parents of books remaining of interest until age approx 18 months, as indeed we found from our own experience. We get dozens of fantastic emails from excited parents, seeing their babies loving these sets for months and months.
BabyShapes Books
BabyShapes 1 introduces simple bold patterns that newborn babies can focus on. It is surprising how engaged in the shapes babies become. Lovely for you and your newborn to enjoy together, sharing the closeness of a first book.
My daughter loved them almost from day one.
BabyShapes 2 develops the themes established in BabyShapes 1. Still suitable from birth, the patterns in this book are more complex and introduce positive and negative images (black/white and white/black) which new babies find fascinating. They will begin to show preferences, so why not see if you notice whether any of the images become a favourite!
As a first time Mum I was struggling to stimulate my 7 week old daughter and my Health Visitor suggested I get some black and white books for her. Not only was she transfixed by the shapes in Book 2 but she actually smiled at the smiley face!
BabyShapes 3
Babies love human faces. From the moment of delivery, babies will prefer a face-like shape to other shapes.
BabyShapes 3 contains simple faces with different expressions. If alert and feeling social (not sleepy or upset), a baby may copy the expressions. If this happens, why not follow baby's lead and try copying the same animated faces back? Wait and see what happens! Be patient, take turns.
We swear that his first smile was at the dot at the beginning of Book 1! Adam spends lots of time looking at the shapes in Book 2 and the faces in book3 are a big hit. Eager to find out what happens, Adam is just starting BabyShapes 4.
By around 12 weeks as your baby's vision improves an interest begins in objects and reaching out to touch them.
BabyShapes 4 introduces you and your baby to these elements. Turn pages together, make sound, reflect and create see-through 3-D effects, whilst mixing drawings and photographs.
